Imagine standing on a platform 40 feet in the air. It is a sunny but windy day and the platform you are standing on is swaying ever so slightly with the power of the wind. You only have a rope to hold on to and you are told to take a step off the platform. You doubt whether the harness you are wearing will really hold you up once you leave the platform although, your friends 40 feet below are cheering and encouraging you. Your hands are sweating, your heart beats faster, and your knees start shaking.
Do you have the courage to take the step?
A few weeks ago, our team at the AIA Sports Complex & Retreat Center had the opportunity to work with a high school baseball team and the above scenario played out on our challenge course. One athlete was having a hard time taking the step off the platform, even after being assured he was secured and safely attached to the equipment.
In a calm voice, I asked the young man what he feared. He replied, “Falling because I fell out of a tree when I was younger.” This opened the door for me to share a story about how having faith – and not fear – has impacted my life – even though I have experienced failure in the past. The young man then took a deep breath and was able to step off the platform.
Hebrews 11:6 says, Without faith it is impossible to please God. Faith is a vital part of the focus in our ministry. We share this passage with many of our groups that come out to participate in our challenge course activities. As you can guess, some of the activities we do involve an element of fear and trust. Whether participants are tackling our high course or working together on some of our low course challenges, faith is a common component on which we focus.
Our team at the AIA Sports Complex and Retreat Center believes that a Total Athlete competes best when they are prepared physically and mentally and spiritually. When all three components successfully intersect, the Total Athlete not only plays with greater motivation, but lives life with greater motivation.
